WHAT:
This project consists of five spreads for the article ‘Fighting Forever’ from Bethel’s Textura magazine. The article chosen follows the story of Sapna, a female boxer from India.
WHY:
I wanted to make sure my design suited the serious and motivational content, treating it respectfully while also creating an eye-catching and passionate layout through the use of bright red and alternating black and white pages. The only typeface I used was Alata, a sans-serif that I felt conveyed strength through simple and stocky letter forms.
I explored a few layouts in my attempts to visually match the content of the story through columns, margins, pull-quotes, and fonts. I ended up deciding that fewer jagged edges suited the article better, which inspired my simple, sans-serif design direction.
Somewhere down the line I started experimenting with different tones of paper, which eventually led me to black and white alternating pages. I liked how they interacted with the grayscale photos integrated throughout and brought a striking look to the article.
Spreads with and without photos are alternated to shake up the layout and keep the reader engaged. I justified the body text to convey strength through a clean, rectangular layout. The photo captions are right-aligned and overlayed atop of photographs to differentiate them from the left-aligned pull quotes.
